Conservatives target Obama and Democrats at CPAC

19 February, 2010 A+  A-

President Obama has been targeted and his party members were not spared too. No, the attack did not come from a terrorist organization, but the verbal attack came from the old line conservatives. There were subtle warnings for Republicans too.On Thursday at the annual Conservative Policy Action Conference (CPAC), almost every speaker heavily criticized Obama administration and his party members, the Democrats. It was more like the newly strengthened “Tea Party” movement dominated the scene at CPAC.

Marco Rubio, who is seeking a Senate berth nomination in Florida, said in the opening address, President Obama and congressional Democrats "are using this downturn as cover, not to fix America but to try to change America, to fundamentally re-define the role of government in our lives and the role of America in the world.” He added, “The good news is it didn’t take long for the American people to figure this out.”

Even though former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin was not present, but the opening day of the three–day conference saw figures like former Vice-President Dick Cheney, Senate majority leader Harry Reid and others criticizing President of the Untied States of America.
Dick Cheney, who accompanied his daughter Liz, said in his speech, “There comes a time when those of us in our generation need to move on and make certain that the younger generation has an opportunity to step up.” Cheney even termed the recent victories of the Republicans in New Jersey, Virginia or in Massachusetts as
“enormously encouraging”. Conference witnessed Cheney’s daughter’s blistering attack on Obama administration’s terror policy.

Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney described how Obama and Democrats have “failed the American people”. He even went further by stating that "liberal neo-monarchists" would "kill the very spirit that has built the nation." Romney brought a surprise guest on Thursday –he was none other than Senator Scott Brown, whose surprising win in the Bay State Senate race helped force Democrats to go back on the much-debated health care bill in January.
But the most heavy criticism came from Dick Armey, the former House majority leader. He said , “You are intellectually shallow, You are a romantic , you are self-indulgent” referring to Obama. Armey even did not hesitate to call the President “ the most incompetent President perhaps in our life time”.

There were warning bells for Republicans also, in Armey’s speech. He said “ they must come to us and show us they are worthy of our loyalty”.Speaker after speaker at CPAC — a showcase for conservative causes since Richard Nixon was in the White House— ridiculed Obama, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid as misguided or worse. They said their grassroots movement would rescue the nation in congressional elections that now seem likely to deliver significant Republican gains.

The convention, hosted by the American Conservative Union, includes both the small-government, anti-tax activists loosely organized in the past year under the tea party label and conservative groups of long standing that focus on issues from abortion to defense.

As the president's approval ratings are down to about 50%, his signature health care initiative stalled and Democrats on the defensive, the mood in CPAC, which has been depicted in various speeches, only shows that there are tough days ahead for President Barak Hussein Obama .
