Facebook wins patent for social network feeds: Should competitors be worried ?

27 February, 2010 A+  A-

Bloggers are writing continuously about the pros and cons, mostly cons of Facebook having won the patent on displaying a news feed of users' actions in a social network. The biggest fear is  of the possibility that Facebook will try to keep all competition far behind with the threats of patent lawsuits.

The patent came through on Tuesday for which Facebook had applied in 2006. Basically the patent refers to a system of keeping tab on and publishing to other what a user does on the website. It is specifically relevant in the scenario of Google Buzz which has a new social networking publishing tool. What it does is that when for example a user upload say a photo to his/her flickr account, that gets published automatically through Buzz feed.

Facebook is keeping quiet about the bloggers' concern that it will kill competition by patent lawsuit threats. However facebook has commented that the feature is loved by users.Yes, users do love the facebook notifications.

In an e-mail a Facebook representative said, " The launch of News Feed in 2006 was a pivotal moment in Facebook’s history and changed the way millions of people consumed and discovered information on the site. We’re humbled by the growth and adoption of News Feed over time and pleased with being awarded the patent.”

Common sense says that Facebook is not likely to start any kind of war with competitors but will rather keep the patent as a defense in case need arises. But there have been some instances of big companies having used the patent to strong arm its rivals like Amazon utilized its patent, rather controversial one on 1-click ordering to trouble Barnes and Nobles in 1999.

But let us hope that such a need never arises with Facebook which the largest social network and in very good condition to possibly need to stoop to such tactics. I know, some of you must be saying what about facebook home page issues and facebook login page or facebook sign in page problems and Facebook phishing threats. Don't worry guys, no problems with facebook privacy, those are already old issues, sorted well.  I am sure you must have already seen the difference by now. Dont worry endlessly about the facebook patent ramifications.
