Health Care Reform Bill Awaits Senate Nod: Can Democrats do it?

11 March, 2010 A+  A-

President Obama’s deadline of March 18 on the passage of the health care bill is approaching fast; though not much work has been done in this regard. The President has been making rigorous attempts to sell his health care proposal. However, it remains to be seen if this dream bill will culminate into reality.

The US Health Care Reforms bill continues to draw flak, with the House and Senate Democrats busy intensely negotiating on acceding to a compromise bill, which can take the draft form on Friday. But before that anything can happen, as the Congressional Budget Office is preparing to release the cost assessment of the much talked about health care bill.

The Democrats seem to be making it clear that it will not take long to get the compromise bill passed in both the House and the Senate. Even Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s statement makes it rather clear that odds are clear for the bill. To turn the bill into a reality, President Obama has been vigorously demanding the Congress to approve the health care reform bill.

Even as the bill is being discussed in the Congress, health care insurance industry has pledged about $10 million to block the proposal. The debate on the bill has gone to an extent that one of the Republicans has blamed his non-acceptance of the bill as the reason for his ouster from the House.

While the Democrats are scheming how to secure acceptance of the bill in the Senate, the Republicans are making efforts to block the bill. However, there are a few Democrats who do not like some aspects of the bill, the prime among them being the soft tone taken by the bill on abortion. There are some other issues that have failed to get acceptance from the lawmakers. The health care reform bill aims primarily at the low income Americans and provides additional subsidies for them to purchase health insurance. The bill also provides for more aid for states coming under the Medicaid program.

With President Obama making phenomenal efforts to win over lawmakers as well as the US public and making campaign-style appearances, reminding everyone of “Candidate” Obama, the health care reform bill is the only topic that is making headlines in the United States these days.
