Nokia smartphones get a new free Skype Client
Skype and Nokia have launched a new Skype client for the Symbian mobile OS.
The free version of the client can be easily downloaded from Nokia’s Ovi store. The new client will start with about 20 phones in the beginning. This free version of Skype will help users to make Skype-to-Skype calls, send instant messages and share files, including photos, via a Wi-Fi or mobile data connection without charging anything to them. The system will be cost effective as users can use it to send SMS messages to phones abroad for free.
Different Clients have been designed by Nokia and Skype to meet the requirements of varied touchscreen Nokia phones, comprising of the Nokia N97 mini and the new Nokia X6, and even for the models that make use of normal buttons such as Nokia E72. In spite releasing different versions of the client the functionality remains the same for both the cases.
Skype proposes that users should go for an unlimited data plan if they are looking forward to install the client as it uses a mobile data connection. Sahel further said that they are also working to launch versions of the clients for Symbian smartphones for other manufacturers like Sony Ericsson. Developing a client for Android is top priority for Skype and they are planning to launch it as early as possible.
Russ Shaw, general manager for Mobile at Skype, will explain at Cebit on Thursday as how the association of telecom operators and Skype can fetch more revenue for them.
