OSCARS WITH A DIFFERENCE: Christoph Waltz rules
It was a night of firsts at the Academy Awards 2010 as Christoph Waltz won his maiden Oscar. Waltz was named Best Supporting Actor for the memorable performance of Christoph Waltz “Inglourious Basterds”.
He can now add the most important film prize in the world to his Golden Globe and a Golden Palme in Cannes. The 53-year-old Austrian-born actor, a popular figure in German film and television industry, was unknown in United States but this film "Basterds" has grown his stature manifolds . And though he won at Cannes, but it wasn't until the film got accolades in the Oscars 2010 that Waltz actually waltzed his way into fame. And, before the Christoph Waltz Oscar, he has already pocketed 27 awards for his character in "Inglourious".
What was so remarkable about his sadistic character name Col. Hans Landa, besides being called the "Jew Hunter" was the precise manner in which Waltz brought Quentin Tarantino's over-the-top world. The slight sneer, the arched brow, the unblinking gaze of ice-cold eyes all of it pitch-perfect. A more insidious villain is hard to imagine than Waltz's psychopath actually savoring his mission of murder and mayhem.
It's for sure that we'll see a great deal more of Mr. Waltz. He'll soon have his evil way on screen with Seth Rogen in "The Green Hornet," though this one will, no doubt, be a sweetheart by comparison to the "Jew Hunter". There are also rumors that he is going to play the paranoid animal trainer in "Water for Elephants" with Reese Witherspoon, and many more U.S.-based projects are shaping up too. However, let's hope there's a good guy in somewhere for Waltz; because some of that charm should be used for good, not just evil.
