San Diego State Defeat Utah
By Ricky Alvarez
San Diego State’s star D.J. Gay scored 15 points and keyed a 21-3 run in the first half to help his side register an 85-53 win over Utah yesterday. This was the Aztecs (24-1, 9-1 Mountain West) fourth consecutive win. They last suffered defeat on January 26 at Brigham Young. Billy White scored 15 points. Sophomore forward Kawhi Leonard scored 12 points and contributed 14 rebounds for his 17th double-double of the season. Reserve guard Jamaal Franklin performed well to score his career-best l3.
Will Clyburn top scored for Utah with 18 points. Clyburn is the second-leading scorer in the conference at 18.3 points a game. Senior guard Gay was playing in his 128th consecutive game and he has now become the most capped player for San Diego State.
“If we go out and put the pressure on people, especially out here in this environment, a lot of people get down,” senior center Brian Carlwell said to The Daily Aztec. “A lot of people get down on themselves, they get down on each other, and we want to try to make the people quit. So we get out there and we run. We were able to do that today and we had a lot of
success doing it.”
“We were really, really good in the first half at both ends of the floor,” head coach Steve Fisher said. “We played a game in the fashion that would get us a 27-point lead that we got. I’m very pleased with how we competed in the game.”
