Shooting in Alabama: Three dead, Biology Professor charged:
Amy Bishop, a biology professor at the University of Alabama's Huntsville campus has been charged with murder on late Friday night for shooting to death three fellow professors. She was arrested and taken to county jail . While being handcuffed, she was heard saying, "It didn't happen. There's no way ... they are still alive."
Police says that On Friday afternoon at a faculty meeting, Amy opened fire killing 3 and injuring other 3 university employees. The charge against Amy Bishop is one count of capital murder.
The three dead are Gopi K. Podila, the chairman of the Department of Biological Sciences, and two other faculty members, Maria Ragland Davis and Adriel Johnson. The injured have been identified as department members Luis Cruz-Vera, who is in good condition and Joseph Leahy, in critical condition in intensive care, and staffer Stephanie Monticello, also in critical condition in intensive care.
One of the dead Maria Ragland Davis' husband Sammie Lee Davis has told a newspaper that his wife had spoken about the shooter before saying that the woman is not being able to deal with reality and that she is not as good as she thought she was.
Amy Bishop had joined the Biology faculty at the University as an assistant professor in fall 2003 and is a neurobiologist from Harvard University.
One of her students who attended Amy's class on Friday said, "She's well-known on campus, but I wouldn't say she's a good teacher. I've heard a lot of complaints. She's a genius, but she really just can't explain things."
The student who is an athlete also said that her coach told her team Amy Bishop had been denied tenure and that may have led to the shooting.
"She went to Harvard, so she is very smart. I can see that her getting denied tenure at UAH would be pretty upsetting," the student said.
The Huntsville campus has about 7,500 students in northern Alabama. The university is known for its scientific and engineering programs and often works closely with NASA.
This is the second shooting in a week on an area campus. Last Friday, a 14-year-old student was killed in a middle school hallway in nearby Madison, allegedly by a fellow student.
