Toyota Prius with jammed accelerator brought to a safe stop by Calif. Highway Patrol

9 March, 2010 A+  A-

According to the California Highway Patrol, their officer helped an out of control Toyota Prius moving at a speed of 94 mph to a safe stop on Monday after the driver found that the car's accelerator has jammed on a San Diego County freeway.

The CHP official said that Prius driver James Sikes made a call on 911 around 1:30 p.m. after he increased the speed of his car to over take another passing vehicle on Interstate 8 near La Posta and discovered that he was not able to control his speeding car.

The 61-year-old driver explained the whole incident at a news conference and said that when he tried to push the gas pedal to over take a car, the pedal jumped and then got jammed there. As all this was happening he tried to apply the brakes instead of stopping the car kept on speeding up. He further added that he pressing the pedal so hard that he could smell that the brakes had started burning.

With the help of the loudspeakers, the officers in a patrol car that was moving along with Toyota Prius told Sikes to push the brake pedal with more force and use the emergency brake.

Officer Jesse Udovich told while Sikes was applying the brakes the car got into a steep uphill and that also helped the car to slowdown a bit.

As soon as the car lost its pace to about 50 mph, Sikes switched off the car engine and glided it to stop. The CHP officer had moved his patrol ahead of the Prius as a preventive block.

In a statement issued by Toyota, the company has already sent a field technical specialist to San Diego to examine the whole incident.

Since the last fall, the company has already recalled around 8.5 million cars worldwide, more than 6 million in the United States itself, due the acceleration issues in multiple models and braking issues in the Toyota Prius models.

Toyota customers have been complaining about the cars getting out of control in spite of making efforts to slow down the vehicle, which has even resulted into fatal car crashes. Since the year 2000, the US government has got complaints about 34 deaths that have resulted due to sudden speeding up of Toyota cars.

Recent Toyota Recalls have also reinforced customers’ fears about the safety of the cars.
