Yves Saint Laurent CEO cautions against getting too excited with increased consumer spending
Economic downturn affected all including the Fashion industry. The head of French fashion house Yves Saint Laurent cautioned that it is too early to get excited about the prospects even though consumer spending appears to be on the rise, after a bad 2009.
YSL Chief Executive Valerie Hermann was in agreement with this mood Monday when after watching a presentation of the maison's autumn/winter collection he told Reuters: "We have all been very affected by the year 2009, so we are very careful. It is true that there is more optimism than in mid-2009, but I think we have to wait, to be reasonable and draw lessons of what happened in 2009."
YSL Fashion House was affected very badly by the downward trend in demand from U.S. wholesalers accompanied by lesser spending in Europe. But the trend was reversing now with people spending more said Hermann.
She also said, "We do feel there is a rebound, that there is a genuine desire to buy."
At the YSL fashion show, were present Yves Saint Laurent sitting with Stella McCartney, Balenciaga, Bottega Veneta and Sergio Rossi within the Gucci Group, owned by French retailer PPR.
YSL designer Stefano Pilati who presented his 2010 autumn/winter collection said this year his silhouettes were longer, pants were wider and lower on the hips. Suits and dresses were accompanied with long heavy gold pendants.
He said, "I wanted to pay tribute to Yves Saint Laurent's 1970s style".
Singer Kylie Minogue who was present at the show appreciated YSL designer Stefano Pilati 2010 autumn/winter collection of black suits and dresses fitted with detachable clear plastic mini-capes. She said, "The clear plastic sheets are fabulous. I am loving capes. I have always loved capes. All the best people wear capes. Superman, Wonderwoman, me tonight."
Pilati's show was presented in the Paris Grand Palais on the day a retrospective exhibition of Saint Laurent's work was also showcased in the Petit Palais closeby.
Founder of the YSL fashion house, Saint Laurent, died on June 1 2008 in Paris at the age of 72.
